Eco Enzyme: What It Is and How to Make It

Eco enzyme is an all-purpose liquid made by fermenting fruit and vegetable scraps with sugar and water. It cleans the house, improves soil, and keeps kitchen waste out of the bin. Interest in it keeps growing because it fits a low-waste routine without much effort.

What Eco Enzyme Is

Eco enzyme comes from fermenting organic kitchen waste, meaning fruit and vegetable scraps, together with sugar and water. The result is a brown liquid with a sweet, sour smell. The idea was introduced by Dr Rosukon Poompanvong in Thailand in the 1980s. She found that fermenting organic waste produced a liquid useful for cleaning, for improving soil, and for reducing pollution. Because it is genuinely practical, it spread as a low-impact alternative to household chemicals. A batch takes around three months, depending on temperature and what goes in.

What Is In It

Eco enzyme contains enzymes including protease, lipase and amylase, which break down protein, fat and carbohydrate. It also holds acetic acid, which is antimicrobial, along with the bacteria and yeast that drive the fermentation.

What You Can Use It For

  1. As a natural cleaner. Eco enzyme works around the house without leaving harsh chemical residue behind, which sets it apart from most shop-bought products. The enzymes break down grease and grime well, so it handles floors, kitchens and bathrooms, and it can be used to wash fruit and vegetables.
  2. In the garden. Used as a natural fertiliser, it improves soil quality and helps plants along. Leafy greens, rice, tomatoes and strawberries all respond to it. The microorganisms in the liquid help balance soil microbes so plants grow healthier. It can also improve the flavour of fruit and vegetables, while cutting reliance on chemical fertiliser.

How to Make It

  1. What you need:
    • 300 grams of fruit and vegetable scraps
    • 100 grams of palm sugar or molasses
    • 1 litre of clean water
  2. Steps:
    • Combine everything in a large container that can be closed.
    • Leave it for at least three months.
    • Stir every two weeks so the fermentation stays even.
    • Do not seal the lid tightly. Gas needs somewhere to escape so pressure does not build up.

The ratio is 1 part sugar, 3 parts fruit and vegetable scraps, and 10 parts water.

Eco enzyme is a natural liquid that cleans the house and feeds the garden. Making it at home is straightforward: scraps, sugar, water and patience. It is a small, practical way to send less to landfill and lean toward a lower-waste routine.
