Gua Pindul sits in Bejiharjo village, Karangmojo district, in the Gunungkidul regency southeast of Yogyakarta. It is one of the best known day trips in the region, and the draw is cave tubing: floating through an underground river on an inner tube, looking up at stalactites as you drift. It pulls Indonesian and foreign visitors alike, and the water is gentle enough that most people can manage it.
About the Cave
The cave runs about 350 metres, is roughly 5 metres wide, and leaves around 4 metres between the water and the ceiling. The current is slow, which is what makes it workable for most ages. There are three sections:
- The light zone – open to daylight, good for swimming and playing in the water.
- The dim zone – darker, and much quieter.
- The dark zone – the deepest stretch, with no natural light at all. Your guide’s torch is the only illumination.
Midway through you pass a large stalactite called Soko Guru. It takes five adults with arms outstretched to reach around it, and it counts among the largest in Southeast Asia.

What Cave Tubing Involves
You sit in an inner tube and let the current carry you through the cave. The float takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, with an experienced guide alongside who points out rock formations and explains how the cave formed. Life jacket, helmet and torch are provided.
Many visitors follow it with river tubing on the Oyo River nearby, a 1,500 metre stretch of open water with high cliffs rising along both banks. Same idea, different setting.
Tickets and Opening Hours
- Tickets: entry to the site is around Rp10,000. Cave tubing starts from about Rp45,000 per person for Indonesian visitors and Rp90,000 per person for foreign visitors.
- Hours: open daily from 07:00 to 16:30. Coming early is worth it, because the site is quieter and cooler before the crowds arrive, especially in holiday season.

Facilities
There is ample parking, a transit area, toilets, a prayer room and a covered pavilion for resting. Small stalls sell wedang Pindul, a warm local drink that goes down well once you climb out of the water. Changing rooms and secure storage for your belongings are available too.
Tips for Your Visit
A few things worth knowing before you go:
- Arrive early. Mornings are fresher and the site has not filled up yet.
- Wear something that dries quickly. You will get wet, so comfort matters more than looks.
- Listen to your guide. The instructions are about safety, not formality.
Gua Pindul suits anyone who wants to see an underground river without needing caving experience. Between the tubing itself, the add-on trips nearby and the facilities on site, it makes an easy half day out with family or friends.
