Lava Tour Merapi is one of Yogyakarta’s signature day trips: a jeep ride across the slopes of Mount Merapi, the most active volcano in Indonesia. The water track is an off-road run along the riverbed.
- Medium wet route:
- Duration: 2 hours
- Price: from Rp550,000 per jeep (seats four)
- Stops: Sisa Hartaku Mini Museum, The Lost World Park, Kaliadem Bunker and the water track
- Long route:
- Duration: 2.5 hours
- Price: from Rp600,000 per jeep (seats four)

- Stops: a sunrise viewpoint plus other sites along the way, for anyone who wants the mountain in early morning light (sunrise spot, Kaliadem Bunker, The Lost World Park, Sisa Hartaku Mini Museum)
Stops are usually flexible and can change depending on conditions on the mountain and what you ask for.
What You See Along the Way
The stops carry real history alongside the views:
- Sisa Hartaku Mini Museum: a small museum holding belongings caught in the 2010 eruption. Household items, the frame of a motorbike, and other objects left warped by the heat.
- Batu Alien: a large rock thrown out by the eruption, known for the face-like shape in its surface. It sits in the Cangkringan area and is a favourite photo stop.
- Kaliadem Bunker: a shelter that became a sober landmark of how powerful the eruption was, because it did not protect the people who sheltered there. It is open to visitors now, with Mount Merapi behind it.
- Kalikuning River: the water track runs along this riverbed, a rougher off-road stretch over rock and through shallow water. Pick this one if you want the ride itself to be the adventure.

What Is Provided
Operators generally include the following:
- Off-road jeep: each comes with an experienced driver, plus a mask against volcanic dust and a helmet.
- Toilets and food stalls: several stops have toilets and warungs selling food and drinks.
- Insurance: Jasa Raharja cover is included in the tour price.
Tips for the Trip
A few things that make the ride more comfortable:
- Cover up and bring a mask. Volcanic dust is still around in places, so long sleeves and a mask help.
- Charge your phone. There are more photo stops than you expect.
- Go early. The air is cooler and the slopes are quieter.
- Book ahead, particularly in holiday season, so a jeep is actually available.
